On January 29, when we were in the sixth grade Barbara fell through the ice on the public side of Sunset Lake. Her dad called the police to clear the lake off. Unbeknownst to anyone was that my little brother had walked across the lake from our lakeside home and Doug had fallen through the ice. The two little kids he was with ran home to tell their mother. Our little French poodle was found in the ice cold waters when the police cleared the lake. They did not see my brother until Sambo jumbed out of the police man's arms and back into the ice cold water. That is when they found my four year old brother floating face down under the ice and dragged him out. Three police officers worked on him for twenty minutes. Two gave up but the third, Bill Varraso would not quit. Remember Officer Bill? Doug's eyes finally fluttered open and Sambo, Officer Bill - and Barbara were my heros! I was so sad to hear of her passing. She was much too young.

Karen, Wow, that's an amazing story. What looked to be a heartbreaking outcome turned out to have such a happy ending! And it was such a coincidence that your future BHS classmate played a part in your brother's rescue. Thank you for sharing this coincidence. Mark and I were sorry to learn of Barbara's death.
